    "Pitched Lung In Bell Streams" are two, fifteen minute, compositions that bring a whirlwind of bells, alto saxophone and upright bass together, mixing heavy improvisation with overdub and arrangement. This album was recorded both outdoors in the Sonoran Desert and in the studio at the artist's home in Tucson.

    These long form instrumentals center on the bell as a percussive movement and atmospheric location for other sounds to arise and fall in and out of place. Conceived of as an elemental work, the timbre throughout its entirety speaks to water and air in relation to one another. The bells as watery and vibratory are imagined as both shallow tributaries of sound gathering and dispersing at varying points and deep pools that objects sink and disappear within. The saxophone, as an appendage of anxious and smoggy air, sweeps throughout the compositions in dry, flustered groupings.

    Ruehlen often uses an interchanging palette of tools, like a disheveled and crisscrossed mixer set up, as an extended technique for re-organizing or intensifying certain aspects of the woodwind's voice, bringing about harsh gusts that edge out or squeeze between saturated spaces in the music. Complicating the arrangement through crude synthesis, Ruehlen splits open the tone and placement of each instrument's frequencies and programmatic tendencies. The recording is like something encountered en plein-air as the painter who abandons the studio for the rays of shifting light in an open field.     ... more
